Free Nib

The ballpoint pen was created as an alternative to the fountain pen to provide a more convenient writing instrument. In use for over 150 years, the ball mechanism nib and oil-based ink made the ballpoint far easier to use and carry.

Although convenient, writers missed the smoothness of the fountain pen and the look of its water-based ink on the page. This led to the invention of the rollerball pen.

While like ballpoint pens in employing a ball writing mechanism at the nib, the significant difference is that rollerball pens generally use a free flowing water-based ink. Ballpoint pens on the other hand employ a viscous oil-based ink.

This gives writing performed with a rollerball pen the look of fountain pen ink on the page, and therefore its distinctive writing qualities, such as saturating deeper and wider into the paper. As such, rollerball pens are though of as between a fountain and a ballpoint pen, blending convenience with the feel of a fountain pen.

Ballpoint pens also generally employ a “push” or a “twist” mechanisms as there is not such a need to worry about the nib drying-out. Rollerball pens however have a screw-on cap because the rollerball’s water based ink can evaporate and dry the nib. However top-end designers such as Waterman make rollerball pens that manage to avoid this issue if the cap is accidentally left off.

Advantages & Disadvantages

One advantage of a rollerball pen is that if requires less pressure applied to the page than ballpoint pens, meaning there is less stress placed on the writer’s hand. Writing from a rollerball pen also generally appears more bold on the page.

One disadvantage of rollerball pens however is that the ink requires more time to dry, meaning smudging is a greater possibility. The free-flowing ink can also “bleed” through the paper more than ballpoint pens, and this also means that rollerball pens tend to use more ink. For this reason, the ink of rollerball pens generally needs to be replaced more often.

I wouldn’t recommend any of those shoes for running. Your knees, ankles, hips, arches.. everything takes a beating while your running. The best way to prevent injury is to get a high quality running shoe targeted for your type of foot and running style. I would suggest getting a pair of last year’s Asics gel-kayano if you can afford them, they are well worth it. The previous models are always cheaper. NewBalance 992s are really good as well. I can say with great confidence that Nike SHOX are totally out of the question.
