Bare Gloss

How to paint a wooden boat
Author: Terry Buddel
One of the great mysteries of the most modern boats is the amount of high-tech gobble-de-Gook that half of the house boat is scheduled to go to Time to paint the boat after the terrible amount of sanding, fairing and hard work is (mostly) and the fruits of their work now needs a deep gloss paint bright promises to make today. This part, at least in my opinion is one the best parts of the vessel on arrival! (Well, at least the beginning of the line Arrival!)
The painting of a ship used to be reasonably simple. They were a dry day, one of the fathers of the brushes, turpis a roll of tape, a bit of pink primer left in the decoration and a half gallon of shiny blue enamel paint from local hardware … were the days!
It is not the case today, my friends! The boat that unsuspecting child to the supermarket or local Chandlery be better prepared for the worst, not only will (or her) face a large attack on their portfolios, but an amazing variety of high-tech whiz wow absurdity that (usually) do not tend to throw in your general direction in the hope that you are under the stress and buy several gallons of goop coming last polurethanicalslitheryaminomolecular in. For example, you are faced with names like "Interlux Interthane coating. I mean, come on, that sounds like a new space invaders Thursday! This painting is bloody! There are many others, but I am sure you have a sense of what I say.
Another example of the kind of thing that drives me nuts is that you can expect to buy several gallons of an iso-cyanate two pack polyurethane marine paint is not can be said with a laugh fumigation illegal, unless you have a license to do so, buzz buzz! I guess they have to make new names to go with the new paint for collection policies the company to $ 150 per liter of some of these new paintings up! What the hell have found that expensive to do such things? I felt that painting was about gallons of linseed oil, turpis, drying agents and some ounces of colored pigment can … I really disconnected from reality?
BACK TO BASICS
Why paint timber ships? Or any other vessel for that matter? The first part of this question is easy. Boats more smarter and better than gloss, and a little shine … after all is only human nature. The second question is this: we want to protect. Well, pardon? Well, the wood rots, but the painting, right? – Fake! Wood left to itself does not rot. The putrefaction of wood only for their environment. There are many cases to make clear untreated wood can last for centuries, as it is in the right environment. Basically, there is little evidence to begin to rot the wood. Biological attack spores, fungi, temperature, high humidity or absorption of physical assault from the sea and sea probes that allow the penetration of all other elements.
No Be sure that the contaminated water from the wood can deteriorate to the point where it will rot …. to add a chemical to the list. Therefore, in light of all these reasons, the obligation to protect our boat by painting nude totally against these attacks.
PREPARATION OF WOOD
The preparation of wood can cover a range of different needs. If the boat is a new building, will not have to go through many stages of preparation as old boat had to go in May. With certain types of boats, where a boat was built by another method such as banda board or molding cold to paint the boat as a fiberglass boat, since this or cover layers of fiber glass or wood, as wood was coated with epoxy, which does not allow the paint to adhere properly. However, to protect bare wood, then use another tactic. Bare wood in its natural state millions of thin hollow tubes, through him, the construction of the cellulose in its naturally. We join these tubes to prevent the ingress of water in them. Therefore, seal and coat of wood first.
The first thing to do is clean and remove any loose paint and flaking or damaged and dirt left in town – it seems easy to say that but it must be done fast! If necessary (and most of the time it is) via wash the hull of a property after the removal of the paint degreasing all dust preferably with a vacuum cleaner. Remember that no is absolutely necessary to get all the bare hull only dry wood, clean, grease and dust.
FILLING and imperfections
Obviously, it is not a lot of wood crafts are perfect on the outside. There are many imperfections, cracks, faults and fractures, large and small to try to fill with sand and rinse before starting the boat. It's a bit of homework, but the time between now reward you with a boat that will certainly have a better appearance and longer life. Some people to fill these holes and imperfections with epoxy wood filler, but this is not a good idea. Some time later, for example, when the boat must be a resort, is the devil of work to remove the epoxy from a mounting hole. It is preferable to use a wood filler that dries fast and hard, but it is never difficult that you can not remove more evening. For example, the painter, glazing compound is quite hard to the soft mass that can be implemented quickly, and then sanded and painted by satisfactory. Carvel boats have just completed their seams with joint compound after the boat is underway. Once the boat was full and smooth and remove all faire the dust, we are willing to put some paint on reality. Remember, the difference between a professional and a paint job is preparation fans!
Wood
There are two schools of thought on the treatment of wood exposed to wood. I've heard stories that the primers and paints will not adhere to many of them. In my case, I personally never had that happen myself, I am generally in favor of its use. However, I am convinced that in many cases where the paint refuses to maintain the forest because wood does not dry properly after use. There is a percentage of moisture that the wood has all (most are slightly different), where the painting of any type of glue, simply. It can be a maximum of five percent in some wood. Above all, make sure the wood is dry enough to allow any paint to join or filler. Remember also that salt deposits on the wood easily hold water and keep it moist …. if your boat is washed in salt water in fresh water before starting to paint. When and only when, the preservation of dry wood is the next step is:
FIRST
The first coat for go into your helmet is gray metal primer. It is a good introduction to use as it is composed of millions of micro-level metal (aluminum) plates that are each other that water is very difficult to pass the time when Rose first … For example, the circular molecules of a substance to water penetration much more … fast! Gray Primer some oils, and most are anti-mold (biocides for you and me) put two layers of primer gray above the waterline and three not least, below.
SOME OBSERVATIONS ON OTHER Primers
There is a whole world of books and paintings are confused about their qualities are very common. On the basis of dry wood, gray metal primers are good as before. Many oil-based primers for known companies are also very well and do the job perfectly. Hello construct primers should be approached with caution and I must say that personally I've never been too good with them. Most of them containing titanium dioxide (which is much talc for us), and even when fully cured can absorb large amounts of moisture can actually prevent good paint adhesion. To avoid building what salvation paint primers on good clear and dry days to avoid excessive moisture levels. So, as soon as possible, apply topcoat to seal in. Note also that the construction salvation soft starters are a type of paint and can suffer badly scrapes on beaches shingly to rock or even launch a boat trailer. When sanding these primers do not forget that huge clouds of white powder that is released to be aware that the sand and the wear appropriate safety masks.
FINISHES
Again, there are many types to choose from. Take the first two packages. TWO PACK POLYURETHANE must be applied during the two sub-epoxy-Pack first. They have a fantastic and that's it, but you must be absolutely sure that the timber will not move below the painting, because the cure is so difficult that may crack and (banda plankers cold molded boats are your best option here … except, of course, glass vessels). The reason is that timber ships built to move or "work" as it is known. You can get away with it if your boat was wooden window …. no later than glass as a prevention method to stop leaks. Rarely boats dry and treated appropriately and are always sensitive to movements like the glass in the interior of the timber rots or because it was too dry or wet and shrinks. Also the ships are properly chine, ie, strips of wood stuck between the plates rather than Caulker, have a reasonable chance of not moving.
Well, what else? A single package or container of paint polyurethane can be a good choice for a single … than are almost as bright and as durable as the two packages, but not enough! They are less expensive and much easier to implement than the two packages … many of them, which some research is required in addition to their own choice … I will not participate in a game of foil who are the best! However, remember the most known major manufacturer of paint products are usually ok! It's your call!
So, next on my list are marine enamels. Again, it's worth remember that the sea with nothing in front of them tends to be expensive … a good place to avoid in this quest is the big chain store team sports, only one or two tables in this category, and I went down for me before. This is the name you're looking for!
Even with decent quality marine enamels were known white to yellow with age and how this series is to buy colors like white or cream gloss. My last good marine enamel, is a newcomer … water-based enamel. Personally, I have never used any, but I have heard good reports and there should be some advantages to them for a quick cleaning, and you can even drink the thinners!
ASSORTED OPTIONS
l. Each of these paintings to their different uses and attributes.
HOUSE OF PAINT ENAMEL
Over the years, the quality of house paint enamel was more spectacular to the point that many yacht paint their boats with them. It is a bit softer (and cheaper) than most packs of polyurethane and colors especially the darker shades tend to fade more than others. However, the fact is that they can be an excellent option, especially if you own a small boat and have no repainting every two years …. To buy cheap, easy to apply!
Water based ACRYLIC
It a few years ago, not dream of painting acrylic painting your boat …. allegedly broke into the big bands. This does not, however, not today. My own boat was painted Nicky J using Wattyl Acrylic semi-gloss "CANE", and it's really incredible. I used to peel glossy and semi-gloss white epoxy bridges and single package and is very good. Never once have seemed even delamination. Paint the boat once a year with a roller and it takes less than a day … and forty-two feet long! Is another option!
While there is his choice of painting, but I urge you to remember one thing … Preparation is king … will save much money in the long term, of course.
How to apply your PEINTURES
There are, of course, the three main methods of application of their paints, brush and spray rollering. There is another use that many people, a combination of rolling and tipping, we will address that later.
Take the spray. There are several requirements prerequisites for a good spray. These are usually a good workshop with suction fans and good ventilation using half decent gear spray (Cheapo few things do not cut the mustard) and, above all, adequate and proper safety equipment. There are always exceptions to the rule and there is a chapter that has worked in the yard edge out of time, and it does a fantastic job … imagine what could be better if you worked in! You also see the weather, high humidity is not good and not Excess … more than someone like the car is often the case! The excess paint has been lost and wasted in the process. If you need to take you by boat to the atmosphere in your car, and then spray for you! Oh yes, it is fast (ISH) also!
Brushing by hand, the results can be incredible, if you are patient and know what you can. I saw the ships, at first glance appear to have been sprayed only to discover that have been hand painted with a brush … …. free atmosphere dust and blood of good brushes (I mean expensive) are an absolute necessity here.
Last of all, especially rollering 'roll and tip method. This requires two people working together as a team. A painting on the rollers and other fine follows closely with a good brush and "advice" on the bubble wheel left – incredibly good finish can be obtained by this method.
A word of warning, whatever method you use. Do not be tempted to touching or collapse tracks into the paint or ruin the finish …. Wait until the paint is completely dry and then deal with it! It is tempting, but the paint always seems more faster than the gel you think!
A simple formula for calculating how much you need REPAINTING (COAT FOR ONE)
It is interesting if not exactly thus! But it is very close. This applies to the non-moving brush and spray. There is another formula for this and I do not know!
FORMULA
= A mantle length of ship, the ray x 0.85 x
Divided by square meters covered in instructions per liter of paint.
If you can not work, so does the paint manufacturer will tell you if you call the company hotline.Good Luck!
